Smartphone Voting a Smart Idea?

By News Apr 6, 2021 | 6:23 AM

Amid the current controversy over Republican-led efforts in numerous states to making voting regulations more restrictive, leading to criticism by Democrats and from some companies, which in turn has led to Republican criticism of those companies, Apple CEO Tim Cook envisioned being able to vote using our smartphones, in a new interview with the New York Times. Cook, who was among business leaders criticizing Georgia’s new voting law, said of the prospect of voting by phone, “I would dream of that, because I think that’s where we live. We do our banking on phones. We have our health data on phones. We have more information on a phone about us than is in our houses. And so why not?” He continued, “I think we’re probably all having the wrong conversation on voting rights. We should be talking about using technology,” saying it could expand the accessibility of voting to more Americans. However, there would be election security concerns with having people use their phones to vote, and cybersecurity experts told CBS News in November that in addition to the security issues, voting by phone would also have additional elements that would make present hurdles for some people to vote, including the cost of smartphones, and having internet access.
