We already have a shortage of honey bees to pollinate a lot of what grows but just ONE of these monsters can decimate an entire hive. And they’re not polite about it, decapitating every living thing they find. To make matters worse, even to healthy humans, their stings can be deadly, with a stinger over 1/4″ in length!!
And these are not small insects, either. I’ve got a big pair of mitts and they’re larger than my thumb! Better than two inches on average! Right now they’ve been spotted in the Pacific Northwest and no offense Washington State but you can keep them there!
I recently watched a video of an outdoor explorer purposely getting stung to illustrate the effects and the pain was unbearable and his arm quickly swelled to nearly twice its size! There’s even talk about an epipen not being effective. Wonderful. Those stings can even penetrate a bee keepers suit with seven times the venom of that honeybee. And, go figure, they come from the Orient, specifically Japan where up to 50 people a year die because of them!
Entomologists (bug people) in the Northwest are working hard to eradicate the invasives but it’s too early to chart any results. I can see a new movie coming out…Surviving 2020. Corona beer was pulled off the shelves and I’m waiting for Mogen David to make the next move. And, if you don’t get that reference you’re not old enough!
