Your Arts Program holds monthly social dances.   We use recorded music to ensure musicality.  All of our music is geared to the swing, waltz, foxtrot and the like.  Each month we feature a different playlist that lists the dance style (for those new to dancing) the song title and musician/group.   We currently have dances scheduled through June and more will be added to calendar.  The upcoming dances are January 19, February 23 (featuring the "Crooners" otherwise known as the Rat Pack - Sinatra, Martin, et al), March 16 - Mardi Gras (dress up for the occasion!), April 20 - Spring Fling, May 18 - The Derby Dance (get your Derby hat ready!) and June 22.  These dances are held at the Manitowish Waters Community Center on Hwy 51 in Manitowish Waters from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm.  We offer free snacks and beverages for purchase.  There is a $10 cover charge per person to cover the cost of the dance.  Please call 715-367-6758 with any questions.

GED students encouraged to finish tests this year; new tests coming in 2014 (Rhinelander)
March 4, 2013 - December 10, 2013
Nicolet College
5364 College Drive
Rhinelander, WI 54501

Anyone working on their GED is strongly encouraged to finish the five-test sequence by the end of 2013 or face the prospect of starting over next year.
“The national organization that administers the GED program will implement a series of new tests in 2014 that will be required to earn this academic credential that’s equivalent to a high school diploma,” said Jim Begotka, director of Learner Success at Nicolet College. “We want to make sure that anyone who has started their GED knows about these changes so they can finish their GED by the end of the year. This is the only way students will get credit for work they’ve already completed.”
He added that Nicolet offers free GED preparation classes throughout the Northwoods to help students better prepare and successfully complete the GED tests. These classes, offered through the college’s Academic Success department, are held on the Nicolet Campus just south of Rhinelander, in the Curran Building in downtown Rhinelander, and in numerous other communities including Minocqua, Eagle River, Tomahawk, Lac du Flambeau, Crandon, Carter and Mole Lake.
“Earning a GED is important in many different ways,” Begotka said. “It opens the door to college, better and higher paying jobs, and the personal sense of accomplishment that comes from earning this valuable academic credential.”
Annually, more than 200 students earn their GED or HSED through Nicolet College’s Academic Success program.
He also said individuals need to beware of the scams related to GEDs.  “The Wisconsin technical colleges are the only institutions that can offer official GED testing,” he noted.
Nicolet College offers the GED test on paper and now also in computer-based formats.  If an individual does not meet the minimum required score, students can retake the test for free. This only applies to the computer-based testing option.
For more information, visit nicoletcollege.edu or call the Nicolet College Academic Success department at (715) 365-4455, 1-800-544-3039, ext. 4455; TDD (715) 365-4448.
Summer classes at Nicolet are a great way to advance your college education (Rhinelander)
March 11, 2013 - June 6, 2013
Nicolet College
5364 College Drive
Rhinelander, WI 54501

Enrollment is now open for nearly 100 credit classes Nicolet College will offer in the upcoming Summer Semester.
“Taking college classes in summer has numerous advantages,” said Kenneth Urban, Nicolet vice president of teaching, learning and student success. “Students can shorten their time to graduation, lighten class loads in future semesters, or even begin their college careers.”
Classes will include numerous offerings from Nicolet’s University Transfer Liberal Arts program. These include courses in art, English, geography, history, math, psychology, philosophy, sociology, science and speech. Other options include courses in Nicolet programs such as Accounting, Early Childhood Education, Cosmetology, Industrial Equipment Mechanic, Nursing Assistant, Office Technology, and Welding.
      Classes start Thursday, June 6.
Urban noted that all credits earned in University Transfer classes and many from other Nicolet programs transfer to numerous four-year colleges and universities, including every campus in the University of Wisconsin System.
“Every year we have students from other colleges who are home for the summer take classes at Nicolet and then transfer these credits to the campus they’ll attend in Fall Semester,” Urban said.
Numerous Nicolet summer classes are also offered online or in a hybrid format that blends online and in-class instruction.
“Many students have jobs in the summer or other responsibilities. These online and hybrid classes give students added flexibility, allowing them to complete the coursework at a time that works best for them,” he said.
To view Nicolet’s Summer Semester class schedule, visit nicoletcollege.edu and click on the Course Schedules link at the bottom of the page.
More information about Nicolet is also available by calling the Nicolet Welcome Center at (715) 365-4493, 1-800-544-3039, ext. 4493: TDD (715) 365-4448.

Israeli Zoologist Will Tell About Smuggling Fallow Deer Out Of Iran At The Same Time As "Argo" -- & Other Wildlife Escapades, Tuesday, May 28, 7:30 p.m. at Trees For Tomorrow

Adults and children who love hearing true stories about wildlife and nature are invited to Trees for Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 28, 2013, 7:30 p.m. for a talk by wildlife zoologist, Avinoam Lourie, who helped protect and bring back some of Israel's endangered species.  Lourie presents heart-warming, fascinating, and often hilarious tales of his life as head of the Haifa Zoo, director of Israel's two large nature reserves, and as a conservation warden for the Israeli Parks and Nature Authority.

Not only smuggling thought-to-be extinct Persian Fallow Deer out of Iran, but many other animal escapades such as a Syrian Bear in his bed; an orphaned jackal in his wife's oven (unbeknownst to the wife); Monkeys swinging from the chandelier and throwing valuable vases from the bookshelf; Being stabbed and nearly killed by a jealous male Roe deer; Or had his arm chewed by a "friendly" tiger?

Lourie talks with wit, humor, sensitivity and grace. He also wrote a book together with Eagle River's publicist, Naomi Shapiro, called "A Bear In My Bed & A Jackal In My Oven, Adventures of an Israeli Wildlife Zoologist," which he will have with him and be happy to autograph.

Randy Sabien is a jazz violinist. That means he plays jazz on the violin, right? Answer: Yes, No and What do you mean by jazz?    Strings educator, jazz master, music author and record producer, Randy Sabien is also one of those rare talents to be hailed as both a violinist and a fiddler.

For Randy, the term Jazz Violin is little more than the name of the musical genre where his recordings are found. He regularly steps beyond the boundaries of what many think of as jazz, forging headlong into the worlds of rock, blues and funk. His career began with classical violin lessons, he soon picked up fiddling and from there it was only natural he would find himself playing along with his favorite rock tunes. Then at age 19 he was reborn with the discovery that you could play jazz on the violin. The resulting sound is swinging, rocking, rhythmic and bluesy with a fiddle that often plays more like a saxophone than a violin. There are shades of Duke and Miles and you can certainly hear the echoes of the great jazz violinists from the swing era but above all, Randy is a product of his time - someone who grew up playing the violin while immersed in the music of the 60s and 70s. This led to inspired renditions of tunes by the Beatles, The Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and others. Meanwhile, his own compositions developed as straight ahead jazz for violin. When he put out his first album, In a Fog (©1983), it was received with glowing reviews from Downbeat, JazzTimes, Billboard and others.

Upon his latest release, Rhythm and Bows (©2008), Randy Sabien has assembled a new band featuring three violins. Inspired by the 1930’s Western swing music of Bob Wills, Sabien plugs the concept of multiple fiddles into be-bop, blues-rock, and beyond. Fueled by a four-piece rhythm section, The Fiddlehead Band pays homage to the history of American roots string playing while stretching beyond contemporary conventions. Whether a classic Western swing tunes such as “Maiden’s Prayer,” an instrumental version of a Grateful Dead song, “Stella Blue,” or a swinging Duke Ellington tune, “Mr. Gentle and Mr. Cool,” as the generations-old tradition created by Wills and The Texas Playboys would say: If it makes people dance, Randy Sabien & The Fiddlehead Band will play it!
From Sabien’s classical violin youth to a professional career spanning four decades, he has been a favorite guest of “A Prairie Home Companion” and “Austin City Limits” and has toured the world playing in different styles and with many music greats, from Béla Fleck to Greg Brown. As an educator, Sabien founded and chaired the Strings departments at Berklee College of Music (1978) and McNally Smith College of Music (2009), while his teaching savvy has served students of all ages as “artist in residence” in communities spanning nineteen states, Canada, and Europe. Sabien recently coauthored Jazz Philharmonic (Alfred Publishing), an innovative exploration of jazz methods for string orchestras.
With an endless variety of performance formats and educational settings, Sabien can adapt to virtually any performance situation; festivals, universities, concert halls and clubs. Whatever the scene, when RANDY SABIEN picks up his violin, get ready. His rhythmic, bluesy, swingin’ sound will have you bobbing your head, tapping your toes and dancing right out of your chair!
Randy and the Fiddleheads will be appearing at the Campanile Center for the Arts on Thursday, June 6, at 7:00pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students and can be obtained by calling 715-356-9700. Campanile Center for the Arts is located one block west of southbound Hwy. 51 on Milwaukee St. in downtown Minocqua.

Ministry Health Care's Minocqua Island Swim Challenge Returns (Minocqua)
June 22, 2013 - June 22, 2013
Torpy Park
Minocqua, WI

Registration is now open for the 2013 Minocqua Island Swim Challenge! On Saturday, June 22, 2013 over 100 swimmers will compete in the one mile, open water swim at Torpy Park, in downtown Minocqua. The event is presented by Ministry Health Care and organized by the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce and the Oneida County Public Safety Dive Team. The Swim Challenge returns for a second year after a successful inaugural event in 2012 which brought 75 swimmers from all over the Sate to have fun and raise funds for the dive team.

Swimmers start in the waist deep, 70 degree water of Lake Minocqua at the beach in Torpy Park. The Island Swim Challenge is an out-and-back course; one half mile to a buoy near Devine Island and back to the beach. There will be large buoys marking the course every 200 yards with smaller buoys in between.

The cost to enter is $35.00 (by June 15) and includes a commemorative t-shirt, swim cap, goody bag and finish line food. After Saturday, June 15, 2013 the cost is $45.00. Having the Public Safety Dive Team as beneficiary of this event adds significance to participants in that they are helping a worthy organization that aids and protects those who use the area's lakes and waterways.

The Swim Challenge offers a safe course that appeals to the beginner and recreational lap swimmers as well as competitive age group swimmers and triathletes. It is a race put on by swimmers for swimmers of all levels. Awards will be presented to overall male and female winners and age group first, second & third place finishers.

The Island Swim Challenge could not take place without the help of many volunteers. Top on the list is the Oneida County Public Safety Dive Team handling course design and race safety as well as concession sales. The Lake Minocqua/Kawaguesaga Lake Protection Association members will be out in full force helping with course safety and traffic control. Dozens of volunteer paddlers provide additional support in the water.

The Oneida County Public Safety Dive Team is currently made up of 13 Public Safety divers who are committed to assisting our communities in water related emergencies. They provide immediate response to water related emergencies throughout Oneida County's 1200 square miles, over 1000 lakes and 74000 acres of water.  The Dive Team helps keep our residents and thousands of visitors safe every year.

For additional information about the race or to register, please visit www.minocquaswimchallenge.com . You may also stop by or call the Minocqua Area Chamber office (715-356-5266) or Timber Bay Sport & Dive, Hwy 51, Woodruff

Muggy Buggy 5K / Xtreme Returns (Minocqua)
July 6, 2013 - July 6, 2013
10:30am
Minocqua Winter Park Nordic Ski Center
Minocqua, WI

Are you a runner/walker who enjoys getting off 'the beaten path' now and again?  If so, the sixth running of the the Muggy Buggy 5k and the third running of Muggy Buggy X may be just for you!  These races will take place Saturday morning July 6th on the trails around the Minocqua Winter Park Nordic Ski Center.  The 5K is a timed classic trail race where runners will compete for buggy prizes in 10 year age groupings in this fun and challenging event that begins at 9am.

At 10:30am the real challenge kicks off with the 'shorter but sweeter' Muggy Buggy X. In this case 'X' is short for eXtreme.  In other words, the 2.?km course will arguably be the toughest 2.?kms you'll ever run, but also the most 'fun' you'll ever have over that distance.  The course is packed with serious ups and downs, mud, water, more ups and downs, more mud, narrow twisty stuff, then you get to the 'swamp' and then you're done.  On top of it, you do it all for pride and glory and a nice cold hose shower!  Sound like fun?!?!?   If you're a 'gamer', it most certainly is!

Along with the cold shower, racers in both races will receive a commemorative bandana for their efforts.  The grill will be fired up and your entry will include a brat or a burger!  Beverages (beer and gatorade) will be available for purchase.

The timing of the two events allows for folks who would like to do both races to have that opportunity.  Many people did both races last year.  There is no age restriction on participating in either race, but a height of at least 48" (or good swimming skills for those under 48") is suggested for the 'X' race competitors.

All of the proceeds from the races are to benefit the Winter Park Trail Fund and youth/community fitness initiatives.  Winter Park is a not-for-profit town park with a mission of  providing a quality silent sport experience for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages through the protection and maintenance of the trail system.  To get to Minocqua Winter Park, travel west on Hwy 70 from Hwy. 51 for 6.8 miles and turn left on Squirrel Lake Rd.  Go 4.5 miles and turn left on Scotchman Lake Rd. After one half mile, turn right on Squirrel Hill Rd. which will bring you to the Winter Park Chalet.

6:30pm

Michigan based historian Bill Jamerson will perform a program of unique songs

and stories about Michigan's Upper Peninsula. With guitar in hand, Jamerson tells

stories and performs original songs about iron miners, early immigrants, ski

jumpers, pasties, thimble berries and the Finnish people. Many of the stories he

tells are based on interviews with iron miners and other longtime residents of the

U.P. The songs range from heart-warming ballads to foot stomping jigs. The

seamlessly integrated songs and stories are as entertaining as they are important,

as honest as they are fun. They are about people both ordinary and extraordinary

and include stories of wit, charm, and strength. The Ontonagon Herald called Bill,

“The Upper Peninsula’s troubadour.”

Jamerson also wrote a novel about the Civilian Conservation Corps, produced

eleven PBS films on Michigan history and has recorded three CD’s of songs about

Midwest history. His CD’s will be available for purchase. Refreshments will be
