If I had a wish, it would be able to see what parts of our current history are going to be banned or removed or whatever in the coming years. I think we should take the word, “history” out of the dictionary because we don’t have one anymore. Over sensitive people are ruling the roost and you can’t change history, you learn from it. THAT is what makes us better. Tearing down statues, removing logos or flags don’t change the fact things happened. And here’s the latest…
Because she recorded “racist” songs back in the 1930’s, the iconic Kate Smith had her famous recording of, “God Bless America” removed from the opening of games with the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Flyers. Last weekend, the Flyers removed a statue of Smith from the front of their stadium. It’s been there since 1987.
Smith recorded two songs over 80 years ago that reflect offensive lyrics by TODAY’S standards. SO WHAT? I’m offended by the fact you’re offended. Doesn’t that stand for something? She and the songs are classic. But no, something that’s older than everyone complaining is now offensive. And the owners of these sports franchises are bending to pressure from a vocal minority because they don’t want to lose a dime. I’m offended when they charge $25 for a brat and a beer, will they change that? I doubt it. But if that brat came from a farmer flying a Confederate flag, they wouldn’t have that either!!
This is bull. Schools are now ignoring critical parts of our heritage, our history, who we were compared to who are now. It also extends well beyond, like back in January when the softies on the Hurley school board voted to change the, “Midgets” mascot name. Gimme a break. Marquette will always be the Warriors to me. The Washington Wizards NBA franchise was rebranded to the Wizards because the new owner believed “Bullets” created an atmosphere of gun violence overtones. WHAT?
Where does it end? Problem is, it doesn’t. And it’s too bad. Too bad for our history, which we all grew from. It’ll never go away because it’s now being ignored.
