It’s no secret that technology can be addicting, but a new report shows toddlers are now spending 2.8 hours each day, on average, using tablets. That’s up from an average of 2.6 hours last year. Childwise found YouTube is the most popular app of kids under age 5, across both genders. Content from subscription-based services also “gained significant ground” this year in terms of toddler viewing time. Two other notable finds: pre-school children are interacting more with virtual assistants, like Siri and Alexa, and there was also a spike in the number of toddlers doing crafts and going to the library. And that part is somewhat reassuring…in my opinion and this isn’t the old grampa talking because I’ve got more tech savvy than most…but if you want to raise a social misfit, keep them in front of a screen. What ever happened to taking a walk, playing outside, going fishing or on a bike ride. It’s time to unplug for a while, don’t you think?
Our home is becoming a no-phone zone, much to the chagrin of the grandkids but it’s necessary. If the kid’s best friend is Siri we’re all in trouble…
